The things I like…

Memories etched deep in my heart from my childhood remain the most vivid, even as I’ve grown into the person I am today.

Small and twinkling things,

The dangling ears of a cat

The sweet fragrance sensed in a fleeting moment,

The swaying tip of a tree branch,

Glistening leaves,

A brief rain shower on a Shiny day,

White cherry blossom petals that covered the front of my childhood home,

Morning birdsong,

The light streaming through the church’s windows,

The melody of my mother’s humming as she sang hymns…

In my early years, I was filled with shyness, a stubborn little child.

Within me lived another little version of myself, one with many talents for singing and dancing.

My older sister, with a significant age gap, often took me with her in place of our busy mother. I remember those moments when people we met while out and about wanted to hear the songs that came from the little me. Curious but shy, I always needed something to summon my confidence.

It may not seem like much, but ‘banana gum’ was the small source of courage that briefly allowed me to forget my embarrassment and fear and show myself to the world.

May someone in need of confidence, someone seeking small joys, encounter my work, touch it, wear it,

And may it bring the same feeling as a 5-year-old girl finding the candy she desired in a candy store.”
